Jeers of War [update]

fanboy.jpg

For those who don’t frequent Infendo, i’d like to share something. Jack is Infendo’s main news editor. I am an editorialist and general author on Infendo. Me and Jack don’t agree very much. I have had spats with him from time to time, both here and there.

You see, Jack is very pro-Nintendo and very anti-everyone else. I am pro-Nintendo and anti-people like him. He likes to push the Nintendo bandwagon when he sees it slow down, just to make sure everyone aboard enjoys a smooth ride. As such, he writes many biased articles with select facts thrown in to spike the punch of the already intoxicated Nintendo faithful. It works. Plus he’s snarky, so typically that readership likes to read what he says. They’re on the same wavelength.

That’s fine. I don’t like it, but there’s an audience who does. Problem is, there is a line between basic fanboy hyping and politically charged propaganda that’s uncalled for, even on a Nintendo site. Jack crossed that line today. He picked a couple Gears of War reviews which got an 8/10, nothing to fart at cause an 8 is very solid, but there are tons of others who’ve given it 10’s and 9’s and that’s the worst he could find. He picked this to make a case for Nintendo’s argument that old gameplay mechanics are old and that Wii is the only way to play going forward. Mind you, he’s played neither Gears or Wii, but let’s move on.

Jack says: “This is the same thing you were playing last year, with a new coat of paint. Oh, and a $10 next gen tax. And yet the reviewers are gushing over it. Honestly, if this is perfection, then count me out of the next gen race. Sure, you can slap on motion sensing to the 360 and the PS3 very easily, but their price points and development costs make that an unlikely success in the long run. Enter the Wii again.

He ends with: “In a nutshell, this is what companies like MS and Sony think the next gen should be. Pretty graphics, great sound, and solid gameplay that we’ve all seen before over the last 10 years. The next five years will be about playing it safe and brand new televisions and re-buying the DVDs you already have with Blu-Ray/HD DVD ones. The next gen is an 8 out of 10. Unfortunately, playing it safe means you never move forward, and that doesn’t help anybody. Enter Wii.

People of intendo, what say you? My feelings are already out there, but i wanna hear your side. Is this kind of self-assurance that Wii is the right choice for you the thing to do? As a commenter on Inf said, everyone on that site is rooting for Nintendo already, so why is this kind of campaigning needed?

~~~
[Update: The fine folks at 4cr have embarrased themselves more than they needed to by linking and agreeing with Jack’s post. However, thank goodness there are Nintendo fans out there who agree with the philosophy of this here site, because most of the 30+ comments (about 95%) disagree with both Jack and Benny, the 4cr writer who linked the story. Here’s a choice quote:
That article over at Infendo has to be one of the worst game related posts I have EVER read. The fanboy bias from that post has set the new benchmark for all blogs.
Its even more disappointing that a solid site such as 4cr would reduce themselves to that level.
I don’t even understand why such an article needed to be written in the first place. Gears has NOTHING to do with the Wii and yet infendo and 4cr seemed to have taken offence to it.
Why? Because its possible that good games can be made on other systems? Do you guys actually feel threatened by Gears because it delivers a solid gaming experience with good looking production values (graphics/sound) without the need of the Wiimote?
Rollin: I’ve been a long reader of Infendo, but that article by Jack, and his previous articles are really getting to the point where Infendo is starting to become nothing more than a fanboy propaganda site.
God, this fanboy bullshit is getting out of control and really needs to stop.
    The thing is, Gears of War IS a new way to play an already existing genre. Pop and stop mechanics have never been so refined or intense in a third person shooter.
    Main point: Gears of War would be unplayable on the Wii, and is probably the highest reviewed game this year. Based on the number of reviews it has received so far, Gears of War is the 35th highest rated game of all time with an average of 93.9% (according to http://www.gamerankings.com/). It needs at least 3 more high-scoring reviews before it can be placed in the top 10.
  2. November 8, 2006 8:02 pm
    Correction: Actually, Gears is much lower on the complete list because it doesn’t have those three reviews. From what I can tell, once it gets at least three more, it’ll be number 35.
  3. November 8, 2006 8:19 pm
    I prefer Metacritic. 96% average score.
    Gears of War reminds me of a game called:
    Kill Switch.
    where its a FPS trapped with a 3rd person character.
    PLay killswitch for the regular xbox and you will see that its pretty much exactly like Gears of War, just without the really nice graphics and multiplayer.
  5. November 8, 2006 9:45 pm
    I can’t say anything about gears as a game, but the guys who made certainly seem like they’re gamers/designers who are really trying to put out something new and different, if not revolutionary. And if the people behind a game are inspired, there’s a good chance that the game will be as well. A good chance. Like I said, haven’t tried it yet.
    Either way, Rollin’s right; that post was highly uncalled for.
    Very graphic I know, but the truth hurts.
    Way to go Jack off, you’re officially Wii’s bitch as well intendo’s new poster child fanboy with editorial delusions of grandeur.
    Awaiting a rebuttal to your article.
    …from me?
    Hm, unless i somehow get to play the game, i can’t do it. I think my comment and those of everyone on Inf and 4cr did the trick, though. If you notice, he kind of disappeared after the backlash.
    Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
    Holy shit. I clicked the link and apparently they pulled a 1up and took down the article. and now if you view their main site there’s a retraction article where their editor apologizes for the writer jumping the gun. This is getting more hilarious by the moment.
    Wow this guy applauds him!
    He stated his opinion, but on no basis other than he thinks Nintendo will beat out 360 by 2008. Silly boy.
    Didn’t Reggie say Nintendo is NOT in completion with the Next Gens, but are taking a different route. His entire argument is flawed, especially since he is close minded enough to bash a game he hasn’t played and praise a system he has not touched before.
    SILLY SILLY SILLY!!!!
    Hey, this is Benny from 4cr… the guy responsible for the “embarrassing” post. Just wanted to direct you to the comments I made after that post. I stand by what I posted and linking to the article. I thought it was an interesting take on GoW, and posted it because GoW really hasn’t lit a fire under my ass (as far as hype goes, again… I haven’t played it). Unfortunately for me, what I got from the article (Nintendo is offering something different from what GoW offers… i.e. GoW as a prototypical example of what the 360 offers… good or bad) wasn’t really what everyone else got from the article… but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
  13. November 9, 2006 3:53 am
    Some angry folk up in here. Sure, Jack let a little excitment get in the way of responsible blogging, but keep in mind he’s a volunteer and has no journalistic duties to anyone. Infendo has never pretended to be objective, so said subjectivity should’t be that big of a deal, at least in my eyes.
    Also keep in mind, we’re talking about video games here. Video games (spoken in my best Allen Iverson “practice” accent).
  14. November 9, 2006 4:36 am
    The point of Intendo is that we’re trying to create a gaming blog that is fanboy-free, so in that respect, we’re merely poking fun at Jack’s Wiivangelism. Of course, Infendo (and by extension Jack) have been taking a lot of flack from Rollin lately since he frequents Infendo, but that’s just the way he…Rolls.
  15. November 9, 2006 5:14 am
    Benny, i hear you, but you really couldn’t have expected anything else with what you said. Jack was way into a fanboy rant, and you basically agreed. There’s spin galore on what he said, and you said you concur. Therefore, it should be no surprise you got what you got.
    The fact that for once, someone sided with me on Infendo, is a miracle in and of itself. And in such volume. Fansites get carried away sometimes, and that’s why i’m here.
    Welcome to Intendo, Blake.
    I think this system prejudice will eventually lead to a new form of political correctness toward all consoles and computers, even Macs.
    Surely people must understand that good games are good games no matter what system they appear on. Im a big fanboy dont get me wrong, but my brothers 360 often gets played when I go back to where Im from.
    I dont particularly like Playstation but Xbox is something new for me, PC games that I can play with a decent control pad – Mouse / Keyboard is just not for me.
  17. November 9, 2006 8:18 am
    surely he was pointing out that gears of war was a typically old style game at heart but next gen in graphics. His criticism was not just based on the fact that it was on Xbox360 rather than Nintendo. What he was pointing out was what Nintendo are doing to try and change what gaming is typically seen as.
  18. November 9, 2006 8:25 am
    Hey this is Vinnk from 4cr. Please don’t lump us all together. One man on 4cr wrote that post. Just as one man on this site wrote the original post.
  19. November 9, 2006 8:40 am
    You and Jack need to get a life and worry about things that are important not whether the graphics are too pretty or not.
    Maybe if you would focus your energy on things that matter and less of it on inane gaming, the manufacturers would have a hard time justifying their prices and the “nextgen tax” as you call it.
    Pro-Nintendo and anti-people? Grow up.
    Mmm, there’s something about this fanboyism I don’t like…
    I mean, I’m a big N-fan, and I can agree there’s great games on the ‘competition’.
    But I’ve seen a lot of things regarding GoW and other hyped up stuff.. It’s as simple as it gets, it’s hype, media likes to hype things, and it’s very very difficult to resist it.
    Also, hype brings followers, who on their part up-talk a certain franchise again. It’s as it is. And that’s not only with games, but also with movies & music. All brands, maybe.
    Now, I’ve seen reviews of this game, as well as movies & movie reviews even. I don’t get it, to me, (although I haven’t played it) this is just another shooter. With slighty more tweaks and controls. Ok, AND visuals. That’s it.
    Maybe the fact that I’m European has to do something with it, but I’m not into this blood/gore/shooter thing. I like shooters, but not when you see blood splattering all over the place.
    Is this still about fun? Or is it to take potentional agression away?
    It’s weird that this kind of gore and übercool graphics still sell… And even get Hyped…
    I’m gonna stop my rant here… I wonder if it’ll sell in Europe as well as in the US, but I don’t think so…
    Personally I think you’re both entangled in this e-penis contest of whoever agrees with you more. If you even have to ask for opinions on this to prove a point, that’s sad. I couldn’t see through the thick haze of fanboyism while reading his quotes. I happen to agree with you 100% but I still think you’re both acting like children. Him because he can’t see beyond the veil of his own bias and you because you feel the need to compete with him.
  22. November 9, 2006 10:15 am
    After reading what Jack has had to say, it’s truly sad he is Intendo’s “main news editor”.
    As he may claim to be an “editor” you must be unbiased as possible, if you are unable to do this, stick with writing what you love.
    You turned the “review” into one big Wii add, and for what?
    Wii has yet to prove it’s self to anyone.. You base your “claims” on something you yet to even get a chance to use in your home, rather then booths with 90+ people behind you.
    But I’m not in here to get into what is better and what will win the console war. Sadly you are a fan boy, not a true gamer, just a name whore..
    I’m not Pro Nintendo, nor Sony or even Microsoft.
    I’m Pro Game, I play whats good, for any system.
    As a 360 and GoW owner, I’m entertained by all of this uninformed opinioned being passed off as gospel. The simple fact of it is this: Gears of War is a great game. It is very well designed with excellent controls and superb graphics. 360 owners will feel great about picking it up for their system and playing it online with their friends. Is it better than the Wii lineup? Who knows? The Wii isn’t out yet. Is the Wii an innovative product? Absolutely! I plan on getting one once some more titles come out for it. It’s a sad case you’re trying make when you point out a game’s “8’s” as being a negative. What will you say when Wii games get 8’s or do you think all Wii games will be rated in the 9+ range? You’re in a for a shock if you believe that. All consoles have good games and bad games. Wii will have both and you should prepare yourself for this fact now.
    Well lets look at what both 4cr and Infendo can compare: hype. That’s it. If they were to say, “well I really think the hype for the Wii > the hype for Gears of War” then that is fine. But they aren’t. Instead they are insisting that some game they haven’t played is not a new experience and that an entire platform of games that they have played is truly next gen.
    With the whole Wii launch people are confusing new controls with innovative gameplay. However, just like graphics != a good game, motion control != a good game either. On the DS games like Mario Kart, New Mario Bros., and Advance Wars are all games which use “traditional controls”. Are they all immensely fun games? Yes.
    We haven’t exhausted new idea for gaming that uses a dual analog, 4 buttons, 4 shoulders, d-pad control pad. Something tells me when after Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes out, Jack isn’t going to be touting the fact that Super Smash Bros. is a 2 generation old game with the same controls. Instead, he’ll be going on about how it’s a good decision to not fix it if it ain’t broke.
    And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The classic controller ain’t broke. Graphical upgrades ain’t broke. But you know what, we saw innovative games last gen without graphical upgrades. Halo was in innovative console FPS, Katamari Damacy was an innovative game, and Pikmin was an innovative game. Graphical upgrades featuring complex button layouts FTW.
    Seriously, Jack has recently turned me off Infendo. Blake and other editors from the site will post negative impressions when Nintendo does something stupid. Jake posts things like “Cost of a Wii: $40 to $60, AA batteries” in which his point is that to get a Wii all you have to do is buy a controller and go over to someone’s house who has a Wii. As if 1. You couldn’t do this in past generations of gaming and 2. anyone is going to buy a Wii remote without actually owning a Wii console.
    It’s sad because I really used to like Infendo. Unfortunately, recently with postings like those from Jack it seems to have turned from a fan-site to a fanboy-site.
  27. November 9, 2006 1:19 pm
    @frisby – My mistake, cheers..
  28. November 9, 2006 3:23 pm
    I thought it was clear that Jack was simply stating a personal view about the Wii’s next-gen competition, using Gears of War as an example of the best the competition had to offer. The only thing he should be blamed for was a lack of depth on the opinions stated on his article.
    A much better article could have been made out of the comments of
    PlusDrew, in the comments section of that same article. He made a deeper analysis (also personal, and very speculative, of course, but deeper nonetheless) of how he sees the evolution of gaming, and why he thought GoW, although apparently an excellent game, was not going to evolve the genre.
    All in all, I see this whole debacle as a lost opportunity to discuss what the future of gaming really will look like…
  29. November 9, 2006 5:22 pm
    Look forward to future discussions on that issue, both here and there I-man.
    As for PlusDrew and what Jack said, we all know that gaming is improving at an incremental pace. Being that you fall with the anti-HD crowd, i don’t think you see how ill his will was in that post. With Wii, gaming is still taking baby steps. That’s common knowledge on a Nintendo site (minus the Wii bit). I don’t know how much deeper you can get with all the “HD this, HD that” articles flying around. Gears of War was getting trashed by Jack, you can’t deny that.
    A controller that senses motions is not gonna evolve anything but your interaction. The developer is still resposible for innovating and changing the game, and whatever little bit Epic did to better the genre of the tactical shooter, it helped. How can you honestly sit there and say it did nothing to improve gaming when you haven’t played it? You’re comparing these visual and aural aspects as if that’s all the dev put into it. Gears of War is a labor of love. You could say the same things about Wii, “merely” evolving the input to get the same response.
    Vinnk, sorry i lumped you together here, but when i commented on 4cr, i directed my words at Benny.
    Jkitterm, our lives don’t revolve around blogging, so if you want to concentrate your blog efforts on rescuing cats in trees or whatever it is you do, that’s you. We specialize in gaming and that’s what we discuss on these website contraptions. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule at the soup kitchen to go on a game site and tell us not to talk about gaming, we appreciate it.
    Blake: “Infendo has never pretended to be objective, so said subjectivity should’t be that big of a deal, at least in my eyes.” Right, but when i say something, it’s a problem. Jack went too far into the shameless side of gaming subjectivity, that’s it.
    Zatch, no sorry, i know you wanna make yourself feel all superior to the bloggers, but it’s nothing like that. The point of this site is to counter fanboyism, and i was posting on a relevant topic from another site i happen to write for. I have no hard feelings towards Jack. If you’ve ever read Infendo, you’d see that i’m not exactly Mr Popularity.
    Thanks to skitzo, saunka, guy, frexy, kerri, Rowan, and Shelby (i dig Guitar Hero very much) for your insight.
    Who cares. Gears of War sucks anyway. Ok, now lets hear all the, “you must suck noob” rants now! Anyhow, I’ve played shooters since wolfenstein. I love them, and I’m good at them, and it takes a good player to really understand how bad Gears really is. Once you have sharp enough reflexes and aiming skills you’ll begin to see how much is left up to chance in that crap game. I’ll admit it’s freekin beautiful. But as far as hit-detection and in-battle-consistency goes it might be the worst game I’ve ever played. Consistency is everything in a shooter. If you’re good enough you realize that a shooter is a fast paced chess game and as far as Gears goes it’s like playing chess with a 3 year old that changes the rules every time things get heated. Nothing but frustration bait and a waste of time. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy this game. 360 is cool, ps3 is cool, gears sucks.
