Nintendo wins Oscars for Most Irrelevant Advertising and Misappropriation of Funds

February 25, 2008

Oh Reggie, this is beyond balls-deep.

If you saw it, it had to catch your attention that the little-to-do-with-anything-Oscar Wii Sports made a cameo at the 80th annual film awards last night. In case you missed it, after one of their commercial breaks, the tv audience was greeted with John Stewart and some little black girl playing Wii Tennis on a heavenly big screen that almost spanned across the length of the stage. All it led to was John Stewart making the crack, “Am i supposed to be exhausted after that?” I know Nintendo held their last E3 conference in the Kodak Theater as well, but it’s just a bit too casual of them to leave that Wii casually hooked up to the monitor for a year, only to have John Stewart causally turn it on during a casual commercial break at the casual Oscars.

Jesus. Must we force Wii Sports’ cultural acceptance so much? I mean, no one i know doesn’t know what Wii is, who makes it, and what it does (most motion their hands). What good is this type of marketing, however market penetrating it is, if they can’t spare Wiis to save their lives? Those yen can be better spent, no?

Yea that’s true, too. It substantiates the perception that Wii Sports is the real star of Nintendo’s success, more than Wii itself. Bet they won’t take it out of the bundle anytime soon! Meaning no price cut either.
