Blogshit insane: Italicize me

February 19, 2008

I dunno where you all get your gaming info from cause it definitely aint here, but the pandemic known as snark has birthed an unholy offspring.

Chances are that wherever you get your gaming news these days, somebody there’s gonna be italicizing some shit. I really don’t know when this trend started, but it was at some point in the 2000’s. Bloggers more often than not try to replicate in text that The Office/Family Guy/Justin Long(the Mac guy from the Mac vs PC ads) type of humor that‘s so darn popular now, and they go about this by italicizing the hell out of any and all words they think it beseeches. Don’t get me wrong, i partake in some italics every once in a blue, but these kids take it past the limit then proceed to gang-rape it. Every hint of sarcasm is no longer a hint, because we must now give it away by trying to add the tone of speaking it, thereby effectively removing the feeling of getting the joke, which is the magic of sarcasm to begin with.

Now i’m going to read through this originally unitalicized post and italicize words, possibly even single letters and arbitrary highlights of text, randomly. Willy-nilly, even. For i am a blogger, and that is my duty — to be an unoriginal, uncreative, contrived ball-swinger. Read with the emphases in mind for added effect. Check how the letters lean and fall on each other like a game of trust when in italics.

(Hmmm… I wonder who exactly is Rollin thinking of??)

And what’s your take on commenters over-using bolding, Rollin?

  2. February 19, 2008 7:13 pm

I answer that question very soon. But i do appreciate your bolding… most of the time.

Frankly I don’t mind it as much, unless of course it’s overused.

Wow. Exaggeration, much? I visit Joystiq’s family of blogs pretty regularly, and it’s really not that bad.

At least they do deign to use spell-check pretty regularly, which is more than I can say for this blog. xD

    How dare you insult Frisby!

No, i’m not exaggerating. They are. Lemme name names: JC Fletcher, Candace Savino, and nearly all the other Wii/DS bloggers are jumping on the emphasis train. It’s semi-ridiculous, and i’m not making it up. You strain yourself when reading most of their posts.

What bothers me most is that they try so very hard, but just aren’t funny. It’s damn near impossible for them to be anyway; Ludwig Kietzmann used to produce some chuckles, but ever since AOL gobbled Joystiq up they’ve transformed into what they are now. Boring, press release forwarding parrots.

Speaking of emphasis, I think the best use of strikethrough effects can be found in the Kotaku blog entries…

Kotaku is the best of the big blogs when it comes to snark, hands down, from what i’ve seen. Citizen Game though has to be the absolute best i’ve seen anywhere. But his blog’s a lil’un.
