Here lies Wii: 2006-2008 — Pachter
Mike Pachter rides again. Today he continues his PS3 lovey-dove campaign by proclaiming to EGM that Wii will be overtaken in overall sales proliferation during 2008 by the mighty mighty PlayStation. The catalyst: price. Fuck software, right?
I think the Wii momentum will last until the Playstation 3 is under $300, so another year.
Doesn’t that mean 2009 then? Whatever. However you slice or dice it, Wii is going down. The biased fanperson who posted this on WiiFanboy editorialized it like this:
Perhaps Pachter is making too many assumptions: Will the PS3 drop to under $300? And if so, does that necessarily mean that Nintendo won’t cut the price of the Wii to compete? If Nintendo doesn’t price drop, will people even care (check eBay, for example)?
Listen here, Candace. If PS3 drops in price to $300, Nintendo’s — in my view — stuck in a bind. I feel that Wii can’t be a cent lower without altogether stripping itself of the credibility of a current-gen gaming device. Anything below that will demote it to fad-toy status, like a white, inefficient Easy Bake Oven. Or Furby (which are very efficient, by the way). I believe business has a name for this, but i’m not up on the terms. It has something to do with how the price affects the perception of electronics, and for Wii to hang in the same breath as the others, it should be multiple hundreds of dollars. No less.
Initial airs of superiority from Reggie and Iwata aside (“We’re not competing with, or even in the same league as those other douchenozzles!”), a $50 differential will shift momentum from nearly-last-gen to very-now-gen.
