Here lies Wii: 2006-2008 — Pachter

January 20, 2008

Mike Pachter rides again. Today he continues his PS3 lovey-dove campaign by proclaiming to EGM that Wii will be overtaken in overall sales proliferation during 2008 by the mighty mighty PlayStation. The catalyst: price. Fuck software, right?

I think the Wii momentum will last until the Playstation 3 is under $300, so another year.

Doesn’t that mean 2009 then? Whatever. However you slice or dice it, Wii is going down. The biased fanperson who posted this on WiiFanboy editorialized it like this:

Perhaps Pachter is making too many assumptions: Will the PS3 drop to under $300? And if so, does that necessarily mean that Nintendo won’t cut the price of the Wii to compete? If Nintendo doesn’t price drop, will people even care (check eBay, for example)?

Listen here, Candace. If PS3 drops in price to $300, Nintendo’s — in my view — stuck in a bind. I feel that Wii can’t be a cent lower without altogether stripping itself of the credibility of a current-gen gaming device. Anything below that will demote it to fad-toy status, like a white, inefficient Easy Bake Oven. Or Furby (which are very efficient, by the way). I believe business has a name for this, but i’m not up on the terms. It has something to do with how the price affects the perception of electronics, and for Wii to hang in the same breath as the others, it should be multiple hundreds of dollars. No less.

Initial airs of superiority from Reggie and Iwata aside (“We’re not competing with, or even in the same league as those other douchenozzles!”), a $50 differential will shift momentum from nearly-last-gen to very-now-gen.

First of all, sorry about my english. I know it’s a crap.

I seriously doubt that PS3 will overtake Wii in 2008. Well… I think it’s impossible, really. Even if they cut their price under 300$/€ they can’t shell so much hardware.

We have to add that maybe they dont cut the price (Sony is losing a lot of money with every machine sold) and well… Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, No more heroes and Super Smas Brawl are waiting in the corner to come and rule the market. 2008? No. 2009? Unlikely. 2010? That could be possible….

Hey Baquero, gracias por tus opiniones.

Just to correct you on something: Sony no longer bleeds dollars on hardware. It now costs them $400 to make PS3s, which is the cheapest they sell for at retail.

I can see your preferences making you think Wii will have a great year, but my observations lead me to believe that this will be more PS3’s year than anyone’s. I don’t know if the Wii hypetrain will derail this year; it probably won’t. But i think Nintendo has far less to roll out this year than Sony does, and things will really click for them to the point where Nintendo’s business might be affected.

I don’t know, I think it will be the 360 that eats both Sony’s and Nintendo’s cake this next year… and I don’t think either will go belly up this year, no matter how bad sales are.
