There truly are no heroes anymore

January 17, 2008

leave me be!

As we know, No More Heroes tanked in the country where people take things Japanesey. Suda51 believes his game’s title was a foreshadowing of its penetration in 2girls1finger-land, and had this to say:

Whilst the sales weren’t as high as I hoped, other titles for Wii aren’t selling so well either. Only Nintendo titles are doing well.

Actually I was very surprised about the reality about Wii, because before I was making this game, I wasn’t expecting that Wii would be a console targeted only for non-gamers. I expected more games for hardcore gamers. The reality is different to what I expected.

The man spent god knows how long working on a Killer 7-ish game, making it just a teensy bit more accessible to a major audience, and the Japanese just squat down and shit upon on his labor of psycho love. Well that’s great. Bodes well for Wii’s future when the developer of a semi-high profile exclusive voices his disconcerting opinion of the console he once believed in. I’m still getting it, if only to have something to say in the future when people talk of the useless white box that was thrown into the package of the Nintendo plug-n-play game, Wii Sports. Ahh, nostalgia.

Goodbye serious games, ciao “games as art” debates. Neither of you are welcome on Nintendo home consoles anymore. But hey, who knows. Maybe the Japanese were just bitter to have the violence in their version of the game gimped while the round-eyes got the real deal. Those sick fucks.

Nintendo doesn’t want to get behind “mature” games, and neither does most people who bought a Wii. Here’s why:

Well, maybe that’s not the best example of “mature” work from the adult Wii gamers, but this sad news about No More Heroes does confirm what everyone in this blog knew already: Wii is a Wii Sports/Play/Fit machine. Period. It’s quite fun at that, but hardcore gamers have already flocked to the PS3 and Xbox 360. We’ll keep our Wiis and bring them out once a month to play some golf or Super Mario Galaxy of Excite Truck, but it won’t be our console of choice for when we want to get a challenge or experience a whole new way of playing (how ironic!).

Quite the contrary, Tony! Exhibits A and B.

I think the moment when that really happens to the vast majority of console users, Nintendo will fret a little bit and deploy some desperation maneuvers. They’re coasting right now on the back of the devotees who still swear by them and gobble up the franchise titles by the millions, so as long as that continues they can pretend like they give 2 shits about you and me. Which they don’t.
