Sonic RPG doesn’t look half bad

When Super Mario RPG came out a decade or so ago there was much speculation as to how well a traditional platformer would translate into an RPG.  However, since the game was made by Squaresoft people were giving it a shot at being something unique and great, and it was.  Sonic RPG’s got people in a tizzy because Sonic as a character is like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in that they haven’t been relevant since the early 90s.  Questions have been raised about the viability of the franchise, citing the fact that there wasn’t much of a backstory to work with.  But let’s be serious here, Mario’s story was not the stuff of epics during that day, and eve until now can be summarized in three words: Save the princess.

So while Sonic’s backstory may not exactly be meaty, Bioware’s got probably the best chance of making him relevant again through a solid RPG.  From the looks of the screenshots it’s turning out to at least look visually appealing.  The watercolor-ish backgrounds remind me of Mario and Luigi:Partners in time, and was no doubt in some way inspired by that.  From the screenshot I chose to include here, it looks like they’re the famed sonic loops in the game (looks like you need to use them to clear obstacles, like those boulders), which is a nice touch but overall doesn’t really reveal all too much about the final product.

These screenshots do provide a glimpse into what I think is a very solid looking game, and I’m hoping for the best when it finally comes out.
