Mario helps Buzz Aldrin achieve liftoff

November 5, 2007

At his age, he needs more than a helpful hand — he needs two. With gloves.

Nintendo’s marketing is brilliant. To kill two demographics with one promo, they put some kid with down syndrome in a Mario suit, paired him with Buzz Aldrin, threw them into a zero-G environment, and took pictures of the wild craziness that ensued thereafter. Geriatric homersexuals will buy Mario Galaxy in droves now. New generation and the Greatest Generation: the next Brangelina, or maybe even Bennifer.

While this is a cute counter-argument to ageism, i’m worried that it might have been staged. Mario has been known to fake things every now and again.

Well, let’s face it: Buzz Aldrin’s generation is the one that made Mario popular by playing its first games to begin with! I doubt that any generation that came after remembers Donkey Kong other than by name… and a few screen shots!
