Wii gets Metroid ad channel

August 10, 2007

To sell you on Metroid Prime Corruption, that blue flash on your Wii is to remind you that this is the “Month of Metroid” with the Metroid Prime 3 Preview. Upon downloading the feature-packed distraction, you get two entire low-res videos of gameplay/cutscene footage, two locked promise vids for next week, and 2 pieces of Samus art. I almost spent 10 minutes experiencing all of it.

Also planned in the run-up to the first legitimate Wii game all year are retro Metroid releases for the Virtual Console. NES Metroid hits on the 13th, while Super Metroid comes one week later. One week after that we get the big one, so it’s all a carefully planned sequential rollout to get you pumped.

No demo.

Wow… Nintendo is going to have whole month of Metroid marketing??

Really, Halo 3 has had what? Two whole years??

And the irony is that all of the marketing is happening through the Wii’s VC channel, which people who don’t care that Metroid Prime Corruption doesn’t have any online contento or gameplay at all most likely won’t have, since they most probably haven’t connected their Wii…

Is this some kind of experiment Nintendo is running on its consumer base?

Great points. Everything they do these days are experiments on their consumer base.

And if you look at it, it’s the shoddiest, most non-exciting semi-interactive game advertisement. You get 2 low-res, heavily compressed videos, and a couple of pictures you have to “uncover”. Something tells me Nintendo just plumb forgot what makes the serious gamer tick. Matter of fact, going by their historical stance of “we’ll tell YOU what you want”, i’m wondering now if they ever even bothered to find out.

If they REALLY wanted to have people looking into their VC channel, they should have posted a demo, no matter how short. From the previews I’ve read, it is the new FPS controlling scheme that is going to sell this game the most. So, if they wanted to compete with Halo, that’s what they should have posted: A brief demo with a shoot-out.

But no, they want to give Halo 3 a competing chance, I guess….

I think a serious limiting factor in the “demo” idea is that our Wii’s only have a measly 512 meg of internal memory. Now how much of a demo could you really put on there. Especially if you have downloaded a few VC games and have used it as a memory card for you Wii games?

I really don’t think demos will ever be possible on the Wii until they develop an external HD with a decent amount of memory. Perhaps if SD cards could hold more than 8 gig and be extremely quick with data transfer. That’s assuming the Wii recognizes more than 2 gig of memory from the SD slot anyway.

Wii demos = not likely unless Nintendo seriously looks at increasing memory capacity for the Wii.

No, Wii only recognizes SD cards with up to 2 Gigs of memory… If you put an SD card in there with anything higher, it won’t be recognized.

But if DS can have download demos, why can’t Wii?

“But if DS can have download demos, why can’t Wii?”

Excellent point InvisibleMan and very well worded ;). I haven’t the slightest Idea.

Oh and it can’t recognize more than 2 gigs in the SD slot. That’s sad. Hopefully it’s a software issue that can be corrected in a future patch?

No sign of this over here in Europe.

    I know it’s nothing great, but still…
