E307: Nintendo Conference Liveblog

July 11, 2007

Nintendo’s keynote is over. Here is the commentary from our liveblogging.

They’ve announced a new Zapper. Packing it in with their software [new title mentioned, “well into development”] and will sell for $20.

Reggie’s jokes are bombing as bad Peter Moore’s last night. Mini-E3 is a tough crowd.

Smash Bros Brawl comes out on Dec 3rd, supposedly. Reggie led into it from the Mario & Sonic game, leading to a Sonic in Smash tease that fell flat.

Bill Trinen just showed off Prime 3. Reggie’s back, talking about online now. Let’s see…

Rollin, 12:33 pm

Wifi praise montage, very corny, asians abound.

Rollin, 12:34 pm

5.5 million ppl have played DS wifi.

Rollin, 12:34 pm

112 classic games on VC, 5.6 million downloads so far. Wii Ware coming next year.

New Mii channel, “Check Me Out”. That popularity channel, basically. Vote on Miis.

Rollin, 12:36 pm

Reggie seriously thinks Pokemon on Wii counts as online gaming. Trying to justify the situation.

“But i know you want more…” Madden 08 will be wifi.

Rollin, 12:37 pm

Fifa 08 will be wifi, Dragon Quest Monsters for DS will be wifi, Guitar Hero 3 will be wifi. “Rock in the Wii hours.”

Rollin, 12:38 pm

Mario Kart Wii wifi in Q1 2008.

Rollin, 12:39 pm

Online multiplayer battle mode for MKWii. More racers to come. Newbies and pros will stay neck and neck.

New wheel peripheral from Nintendo designed for Mario Kart.

Rollin, 12:40 pm

Wii Wheel will come packaged with Mario Kart.

Reggie thinks all this has proven their commitment to core gamers. Now he’s back to the casual issue.

Rollin, 12:41 pm

Expanded audience video montage. Bowling and brain training shown.

Rollin, 12:42 pm

So far the conference has been a lot more interesting than MS’, but the audience is barely any more excited. Mario Kart did get a reaction, though.

Iwata takes the stage.

Rollin, 12:43 pm

“Gud Mawning!”

Rollin, 12:43 pm

G4TV’s dumbasses just took a commercial, though i’m sure it won’t have an impact since Iwata usually just tells stories.

Rollin, 12:44 pm

Iwata’s back. Talking about the zapper. It reminds me of the TMP from RE4. Not bad, though i did mock it for a good 5 seconds when it was first showed.

Rollin, 12:49 pm

He’s talking about people “developing a taste” for games.

Users of all skill levels playing together, blah blah. Miyamoto coming soon with a likeminded title to announce.

Rollin, 12:50 pm

Iwata exits after a very enthusiastic “…new GAMERS forever!” exclamation.

Another Wii praise montage.

Rollin, 12:50 pm

Have some family absolutely cheesing it with Mario Galaxy.

Rollin, 12:51 pm

Brain Age 2 coming Aug 20th. Mario Galaxy will be “over the top”, the “first worthy successor to Mario 64″ (ouch), “new gold standard for interface” in any game.

Rollin, 12:53 pm

Mario Galaxy will be here on November 12th.

Rollin, 12:54 pm

My dog just walked into the room and is 1000% more interesting than Reggie Munster.

Rollin, 12:55 pm

Raving Rabbids 2 (god no!) will be “even nuttier”.

Rollin, 12:56 pm

Vision training game Flash Focus coming to North America soon, My Word Coach as well. My Life Coach will improve everything in your life, apparently.

Rollin, 1:00 pm

WiiFit announced, new pressure sensitive scale-like peripheral with it. Looks tangible.

Rollin, 1:00 pm

Apparently they don’t call them “games” anymore. Now, they’re called “Proposals.”

Ruben, 1:01 pm

Looks more innovative and fun than Wii remote. People are dancing, hula hooping, push upping, balancing, playing soccer, yoga-ing, etc.

Rollin, 1:02 pm

YES, “proposals”. Miyamoto’s on. Funky t-shirt included. Bill Trinen providing some embarrassingly cheesy translation.

Rollin, 1:03 pm

WiiFit was Shiggs’ new game. I mean proposal. This is a business, after all.

Rollin, 1:03 pm

WiiFit is being demoed by 3 fitness trainers, software’s calibration is off apparently.

Rollin, 1:04 pm

Dude doing step aerobics now. I’m actually pleased with this. Excersize tapes are DEAD! Nintendo will never die with these tactics.

Rollin, 1:06 pm

This is gonna be my game of the show. That peripheral is genius.

I wish Bill Trinen and Shiggs would stop being apologetic about the calibration. It’s an early demo, we get it.

Rollin, 1:07 pm

It’s called the Wii Balance Board. Very thin. Will make you thin.

Measures how your balance shifts to check how your body moves for full body gameplay. Fully wireless.

They’re gonna do a “body check” on Reggie with the board. I’m scared.

Rollin, 1:09 pm

Crowd is loving their banter. Software is calculating.

Rollin, 1:10 pm

Reggie and Shiggs are about to fight. In a game. Of soccer.

Rollin, 1:13 pm

Reggie got hit with a cleat. Shiggs losing miserably. Reggie wins. “Ole!” music blasts much too loudly, Miyamoto and Trinen exit. G4TV takes a break while Reggie goes back to talking.

Rollin, 1:15 pm

It’s over. WiiFit stole their show. G4 chuckleheads commenting now. Sony coming in about 40.

Rollin, 1:20 pm

All in all, this show was a a step above Microsoft’s in quality. Sony has the most the prove, hopefully they will make me not regret skipping class today.

Iwata said that the veteran gamers should feel that Nintendo still has their best interests in mind after seeing today’s demonstrations. I, for one, feel betrayed. 99% of their efforts seem to be focused on this “expanded audience” crap.

  2. July 11, 2007 1:47 pm

I am scared of the word “proposals”… Kind of calculated to get ’em off the hook if the WiFi service doesn’t cut the mustard.

  3. July 11, 2007 2:00 pm

They really had no case for the wifi situation. All they did was “back it up” by referencing Mario Strikers, Pokemon and the handful of games we already knew would have wifi. Nothing new revealed.

  4. July 11, 2007 4:16 pm

Right… Come to think of it, a few months before MS started their LIVE service, they ran several tests by inviting people to connect through test games. I’ve heard nothing of the sort with Nintendo.

That’s one of the things that make me nervous… you NEVER launch a first-time online gaming service without running some real-world field tests!

  5. July 11, 2007 7:55 pm

hardcore gamers have no place in Nintendo right now. Unless they release a different machine in a year or two to cater to them, which is highly doubtful, all talk of wii 2.0 aside.

  6. July 12, 2007 12:27 pm

I’ll reserve my opinions on whether Wii can cater to the hardcore gamer until I see everything that their hardware has to offer, which most likely we will see with Metroid Prime 3.

Nintendo also has to prove they will have a sustainable online gaming service for Wii, which I don’t know when we will be able to see.
