Plundr: inter-system gangbangs for the masses

Kotaku has a feature up on an amazing sounding DS/PSP/PC/mobile pirate game called Plundr, whose gimmick is all about location-based gaming. The project is homebrew at the moment, but developer Area Code is in talks with pubs to get this destined hit onto shelves.

The game uses wifi to track where you are in the real world, and that spot can translate into an in-game island. Area Code co-founder Frank Lantz: “Each of these islands in the game have a real world location. Based on your location in the world you are either discovering a new island or islands that have been found by another player.” Kotaku states that the idea is to make regular walking routes people take going to and fro (house, work, school) become trade routes in the game. But without the expense of contraining your fun to certain conditions, a la Boktai: “We spent a lot of time wrestling with these issues,” said Lantz. “Ways to make your location relevant in the real world but without making it a constraint.”

Islands are currently the size of 6 New York City blocks and the makers of Plundr wanna pack tons of activities into each of them so you won’t feel impelled to travel all the time. The most exciting aspect of this game to me is being able to access the same, persistent world from a phone, DS, PSP or laptop. Area Code says they want to give each platform’s ships a distinct look, finally actualizing the figurative handheld war in a game. Or maybe it’s a truce?.. Either way, gamers win

Wow, that actually sounds pretty interesting! I’d like to try that out. I like the idea of a day when we have persistent games that go along with your regular routine. Just check in during that coffee break at a wifi coffee shop, which are popping up more and more all over.

A cross-platform portable video game?? In our lifetime?? You jest!

There is no way competing companies will shake hands on this!

That’s is the likelihood, right, but we can expect it span across DS (for sure), phones, and laptops (definitely). I’d really like it if the PSP were involved, though. But i don’t see patents preventing its inclusion, so it could happen.
