Contra 4: Weapons of Mass Nostalgia confirmed

No that aint the name, but Contra 4 is slated for a 2007 shipment, joining Dragon Quest IX as a DS exclusive. Definitely not as big as DQ on the world scale, but i am sure my American mates who were born before 1990 would be much more inclined to buy this long overdue fanjob of a sequel. Whether played on the SNES or on one cramped end of a keyboard with a ROM, Contras 1-3 were the absolute co-op shiznit. Motherfreak Halo. 15 years later, Contra makes a [true] comeback.

Remember back in 2004 when us serious gamer types were dreaming up what advantages a touch-enabled, double-screened handheld might have in the gameplay department — you know, before all this Touch Generations bull? One of the things i slobbered over was being able to have insane battles go from screen to screen, and naturally Contra brings that prospect to light again with “massive boss battles” spanning both screens. Even more naturally, the game will possess a presumably wicked wifi co-op mode. The game takes place 2 years after Contra 3, where our favorite good dudes (plus new friends Mad Dog and Scorpion) “are confronted with a new extraterrestrial menace: the terrifying Black Viper.” Sounds menacing.

Now that i’ve built you up, it’s time to tell you the one con of the game, and it’s a big one: this new Contra is being developed by WayForward Technologies. Again, take a mental trip back to 2004, this time to the DS launch. Remember that game Ping Pals, the “pictochat killer”? Yes, these guys made it. That’s all i have to say. Faster than it took my anticipation to get up, it came crashing down in a burning wreck.

Hell, this could be WayForward’s breakthrough game. Don’t quote me on that.

Boy, those guys in skin-tigh mamey-colored jeans look quite gay!

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I had a different image of Contra in my mind…

Check how he cradles that gun, too.

I’m glad you loved it, too Ryan! Hardly any games make me nostalgic, but Contra is on that list.
