Listing the lists

where's the list in this pic?

In the Chinese calendar, 2006 was the year of the list. This one lists and lambastes the most overused, and therefore worst, including:

  • The top ten games you should have played, but didn’t. The underrated list.
  • The top ten overrated games. The “shame on you for being a follower and liking this” list.
  • The top ten best weapons in gaming. The “let’s just relist the weapons in Doom 2” list.
  • The top ten best video game bad guys. The “yup, we get to talk about Sephiroth and Kefka again” list.
  • The top ten desert island games. The “you have an Internet connection on a desert island” list.

Let me know how you (dis)like it.

The “top ten” list I hate the most: Top Ten Games That Never Were“, in which the author lists supposedly promising games that never made the final cut to retail. My theory is that there are actually more games that didn’t make it than there are games that made it to the store shelves. And since 90% of the games that make it are not worth playing, why would we be interested in the ones that were not even good enough to publish?

OK, I’m probably being too harsh here. The truth is that most of those unpublished games didn’t carry a popular license, otherwise they would have been out even if the developers didn’t finish it.
