Citizen fanboy: the Triforce of Loyalty

November 27, 2006

My turn!

The guy on the right. Black one. Yeah, him.

His name is “Triforce” — officially. He made that his middle (incorporated?) name and goes around wearing a Power Glove, seen here on his right hand, and a black Nintendo varsity style jacket from the NWS, seen here on his torso.

My first encounter with him was on the last leg of my Nintendo fanatic days, last year at the Miyamoto signing at Nintendo World NYC. He was “battling” some Sony/MS(?) guy with a semi-circle of supporters — you could almost imagine them on each side of him, holding spears erect — sitting on his chair like a king on his throne while his “opponent” stood before him. In a Nintendo line, the other guy had no chance. Quite frankly, i wonder why he even bothered. You can’t “beat” Nintendo’s crowd.

The second and hopefully last ever time i saw him was here, at Toys R Us during Wii’s launch. He was first in line, therefore why Reggie is slipping him a forced grin along with a Wii box. As i made my way from front to back upon arrival, i caught a glimpse of him, and i just shook my head and laughed. The guy’s like 26 and he’s the acting King of the Fanboys, dressing up like that blonde kid from the Wizard. (That’s a Wii hat he’s wearing, btw. I don’t think there’s an inch of his body untouched by Nintendo. Literally.) At some point, or birthday, you gotta wake up and smell the firmware update. Nintendo isn’t life. Hard to swallow, i know.

Keep in mind, he was 1st in line out of 2,000+ and waited over a week. I was 130-ish out of 2,000+ and waited 5 hours. He got his about 20 minutes before i did and left about 5 minutes before i did. I know because they made a big deal over every single one of the first 30 people that came out with Wii bags, TV crew and all.

Triforce has served his nerdom well and Nintendo fans all over owe him a great debt. Give him a Power Gloved hand, people. To the face.

I’ve always wondered… how do these people manage to take a week off just like that, to camp out in the concrete?

I got in line on a Toys R’ Us fifteen minutes before they opened, and got my Wii. No Reggie manic handshake, though…

G4’s Attack of the Show showed him during their Wii Launch Times Square segment. I think he had his Wii signed by Reggie.

Outside of that, InvisibleMan is right… how do these guys manage taking a week off from work? Well, I am sure living in mom’s basement helps.
