Advance Wars 2: new again

Nintendo’s marketing dept aint the most creative, seeing as they’re naming the sequel to Advance Wars DS, Advance Wars DS 2, thereby making a second Advance Wars 2 on a Nintendo handheld. Advance Wars, having the “DS” appendage, was ok. But Advance Wars DS 2? Think of a new name for F’s sake. Especially when you’re giving the game an extensive facelift.

AW DS 2 did receive a compelte overhaul in terms of design. Gone are Max, Andy and the others, replaced by a whole new crew. IS went with a whole new, more realistic, miltary look, and quite frankly, it seemed like a pretty wise move. Graphically-wise, the look went with the new design, though it looked pretty much the same. New combat animations were pretty low-quality though, blurry and badly animated. Surely that’s gonna be fixed by the time it comes out. Had time to notice a new unit – bike infantry unit – and that pretty much sums it up.

Ok, semi-extensive. But what’s there sounds quite satiable. Advance Wars was always a tight game wrapped up in questionable artistic choices. I wasn’t a fan of the childish story married to the premise of war. It tried to be more epic than the graphical design allowed, and thus never really felt as big as the characters in the game wanted it to be. This, however, is something i can get behind. Soon as they think up a better name.

For the record, Intelligent Systems is the developer of the Paper Mario games. They mean business. Hope they mean wifi, too.
